Accidents and ship management improvements

As for accidents, they are most often the result of our blunders, poor reasonableness and implementation of management decisions, and the vast majority of them are not in the field of art, but at the level of a low—grade craft.

At one time, when discussing the prestige of the captaincy profession, in the articles of captains, one of the factors determining its difficulties and hardships was called the lack of time in decision-making. I think this is a deep misconception. There is no slower transport than water, except, of course, horse-drawn. And all the processes here, starting with the formation of external conditions (hydrometeorological phenomena) and ending with the movement and control itself, are developing rather slowly.

If the pilot approaches the runway at a speed of 200 km/h, which is more than 5,000 cm/sec, then the skipper approaches the berth at a speed of no more than 15 cm/sec, and he can stop and think. The pilot is deprived of such a privilege. Nevertheless, planes don't crash on landing more often than we do in bulk. This means that the professional thinking of the pilot keeps pace with the speed of flight and even outstrips it. Why do we sometimes fail to control a process that is more than 300 times slower? Probably because we don't know at any particular moment which controlled coordinate needs to be controlled, what its value should be, and what magnitude to set the control action to bring it to this value.

So we begin to act by trial and error. The result is manifested with a long delay due to the inertia of the object, which, by the way, is one of the most important features of ship management. And time is running out. And the less of it there is, the faster it becomes for us to run. Then comes a situation that can be called critical, when only a single decision or only a certain amount of controlling influence can stop its dangerous development. And if there is no solution by this point, a sad outcome is inevitable.

As you can see, the profession has nothing to do with it. We create a shortage of time ourselves with our far from perfect management methods.

The first steps to improve management on large-tonnage vessels were taken at Novorossiysk Shipping Company. By order of the Maritime Safety Service at NWIMU, under the leadership of Professor O. Olshamovsky, studies of the dynamics of tankers of the Crimea and Pobeda types were conducted, their mathematical models were developed, with the help of which the necessary data for navigation planning was obtained, and a maneuvering program methodology was prepared. Similar work is being carried out on both vessels of the Marshal Budyonny type.

The captains of the vessels on which the work was tested: A. Burmaka, A. Uperenko, V. Shafiro — approved and adopted the methodology. The materials are now being sent to other vessels.

It is not necessary, of course, to wait until the appropriate studies are done and the necessary issues are resolved. This can be started right now directly on the ships. Let's start managing according to science. It won't get any worse. This is a definite guarantee. And all possible costs will be more than recouped by reducing accidents, confidence and peace of mind in work, and deep satisfaction with our marine profession. Many players look for a trusted online casino where they can enjoy slots and table games without overwhelming ads before they responsible gambling play at Bitkingz . Reading expert reviews and checking licensing details can help ensure that the experience remains safe, fair, and focused on entertainment rather than chasing losses.
