Katong School students with their instructors in the new F&B Training Room
On 3 September 2014, APSN Katong School and Marina Bay Sands celebrated the opening of 2 Food and Beverage Training Rooms at the former’s school premises along 900 New Upper Changi Road. The Guest of Honour for the Opening Ceremony was Dr Mohd Maliki Osman, Mayor of South East Community Development Council, Minister of State for Ministry of Defense and National Development, and the event took place from 10.30 am to 12:30pm. The $82,000 facilities and curriculum upgrade marks a significant raise in the quality of vocational education for individuals with mild intellectual disability receiving an education at Katong School.
“We are heartened to be part of this collaboration between Marina Bay Sands and APSN Katong School, providing greater opportunity for students of the school to harness their potential to the fullest. We will continue to strengthen such partnerships and open greater avenues for these students as we support them to be better prepared for living, learning and working in an inclusive community” said Dr Maliki Osman.
“The help of community and corporate sponsors such as Marina Bay Sands enables the school to provide its students with an authentic learning platform to develop their Food and Beverage service skills.” said Katong School Principal Mdm Lim Cheng Liew. “It will enhance their readiness for life and career in the F & B sector ahead.“
“We are pleased that our contribution to APSN Katong School will directly and positively impact its students. The government is encouraging young people to acquire relevant skills for career success and we are very humbled to have the opportunity to help provide an industry-ready environment for students to hone their skills. We hope the students will be inspired to discover their fullest potential and develop specialised skills for their future. We look forward to continued collaboration with APSN to help the association meet and exceed its goals,” said Mr George Tanasijevich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marina Bay Sands.
Mr Chan Chee Keong, President of APSN commented: “We would like to thank MBS for their generous donation to enable us to upgrade our domestic kitchen to industry grade. This provides better training in an authentic environment, to better prepare our trainees for open employment in the F&B industry.”
The new Food and Beverage Training Rooms are fully equipped with industrial-grade kitchen equipment and utensils similar to those found in the kitchens of restaurants and cafes. By becoming familiar with industry-standard facilities, APSN Katong school students will be better prepared to adapt to the work environment.
APSN Katong School, along with the rest of the Association, looks forward to more collaborations and years of strong partnership with Marina Bay Sands as they continue to give back to society through meaningful work and initiatives.
