APSN was honoured to welcome President Halimah Yacob at the APSN Centre for Adults (CFA) on 15 September 2017. This was her first public event after being sworn in as President.

In the 1.5-hour visit, Board Member Mr Chan Chee Keong welcomed President Halimah on behalf of APSN and the Board, while CEO Dr Christopher Tay had the opportunity to share further on APSN’s past, present and future plans. In the ‘APSN Mystical Café for All’, President contributed her own handwritten post-it note to the Pay it Forward wall. This wall makes it possible for donors to gift meals towards recipients who can redeem them for free.

Shortly after, she took to touring the facilities at CFA which includes a sheltered workshop and kitchen enterprise. President keenly interacted with the trainees and asked them about their ambitions and lives. She also took interest in their workshop activities, and the trainees showed her how they baked and labelled packages for sale.

“This is a really wonderful visit because it gives me a very good idea of what APSN is doing in order to help our friends with special needs to acquire skills and to be placed in jobs,” she told reporters later.

At the door stop interview after the tour, President Halimah also urged employers to be forthcoming and support the APSN’s work. She noted that our organisation has helped modify workplaces to suit those with special needs, who may find it difficult to pick up skills from training courses at regular centres.

To commemorate this occasion, APSN presented President with a special artwork done by 14-year-old Clarence Seah from APSN Tanglin School. Titled ‘Many blooms’, this art captures flowers blooming in unison, akin to how Singaporeans grow as one in spite of our different races, languages and religions.
