Kian Peng speaking to reporters from ChannelNewsAsia

APSN Delta Senior School’s (DSS) Ong Kian Peng was featured as a success story for Community Chest’s fundraising efforts at its fund raising launch last Thursday.

The Community Chest announced its goal of raising $72.3 million, which will be a stimulus for various social service programmes, including the APSN schools.

Kian Peng is an alumnus of APSN Delta Senior School and APSN Tanglin School (TS). The combined efforts of his own determination and the efforts of the schools’ staff, training and development programmes led to Kian Peng’s progress towards a life of indepedence and self sufficiency.

On March 12, in a conference room at the APSN Centre For Adults, staff volunteers from NTUC FairPrice were seated facing each other. Led by YMCA’s Roger Tan, they discussed their thoughts on their afternoon’s efforts. They had been working with the clients of CFA to maintain the Centre’s grounds, while understanding the work CFA and its clients do.

Throughout the entire project for the afternoon, the volunteers had the opportunity to interact with the clients, while working with them to prune the grounds by weeding grass and trimming hedges. The clients themselves were happy to have visitors for company.

NTUC FairPrice Volunteers working with CFA Horticulture team clients

They were in a joyful mood and chatted with the volunteers.

The clients are trained to work as a team, endure physical challenges of the tasks they are assigned, and had the necessary skills needed in using the tools for gardening.

The volunteers from NTUC FairPrice weren’t simply here just to help our clients in gardening, as backbreaking as the job of the CFA Horticulture team may be. The volunteers also toured the centre’s facilities to understand its programmes: the hydroponics facilities, the bakery, thrift shop operations, and the occupational therapy room. Some were genuinely impressed at what CFA had to offer to its beneficiaries. Miss Ng Runqian, Admin and Operations Executive of the Centre was there to explain the centre’s programmes, while answering the volunteers’ queries.
The Centre’s Admin and Operations Executive Ng Runqian explaining the artwork done by clients.

For many of the staff volunteers, this was an eye opener for them as they were not aware of the existence of such facilities for intellectually disabled people. The tour also helped the volunteers better understand the daily routines of the clients.

“I was impressed with the clients work and attitude. Also, they don’t look much different from us.” Wong Pui Chan, Group Manager at NTUC FairPrice said. “They are also knowledgeable about their work too”, he added.

Jeffrey Yu, Head of Fresh Food Task Force, NTUC FairPrice, was impressed that when they were trimming the hedges, CFA’s Horticulture team clients passed a pair of shears to him by the handles, which was the right way to do it. ”The clients at CFA are very polite people, and know how to do their jobs well and safely..” he said.

Weeding and trimming – clients and volunteers hard at work!

APSN hopes that the volunteers from NTUC FairPrice will share their experience at APSN to their colleagues, friends, and family. APSN hopes there will be many more opportunities for similar activities with NTUC FairPricein the near future.
